TIPS ON STARTING YOUR BUSINESS IN ALBERTA

Registering a trade name is easy and cheap in Alberta:

  1. choose 3 names

  2. go to the local Registries office

  3. the search to see if your chosen name is available costs *$16.05

  4. registration costs *$20.70

Incorporation has never been easier for a small business  in Alberta

  3. to register a numbered company costs *$207.00

  4. if you want your company to have a name then a search is necessary to see if your chosen name is available, cost *$56.75

  5. file the papers in a safe place

*The cost may vary slightly but shouldn't be much more unless you want a complicated share structure when you should be seeing a lawyer and/or a chartered accountant.

Business Cards can be as easy as getting them printed or as cheap as printing your own.

  1. go to the local stationery store

  2. buy a pack of business cards with pre-printed backgrounds (A4)

  3. open Microsoft Word, click on tools the "envelopes & labels"

  4. follow the instructions (look up business cards on the help feature)

  5. give out to anybody who even looks as though they're interested

  6. get fed up and get some printed, taking in your own as a sample

Bank Accounts may only be opened in a business name if you can prove you have a business.

  1. those papers you filed in a safe place? take them to the bank as proof that you have a business

  2. be prepared to pay a fee each month but sometimes the first few months are free so ask

  3. look for the bank that gives you what you need, especially if your customers are not all located in Canada

Accounting for a business need not be frightening.
